Interview with David Sussmann

Can you tell us about the Blue Drop movement and the actions of Pure Ocean?

David Sussmann : La Goutte Bleue is a blue recyclable bag, 100% Made in France.

The idea is to inspire the public to take action for the environment by inviting them to collect up to 30 litres of litter.

For each Blue Drop kit, 5 euros are donated to Ocean Research.

We believe that scientists are the first to provide solutions to the many threats facing the oceans. Our NGO selects and supports innovative research programmes to preserve biodiversity and marine ecosystems. These projects aim to increase knowledge about the oceans and contribute to the fight against global warming, while preserving biodiversity.

Why should companies be involved in ocean conservation?

Entrepreneurs must transform themselves in a sustainable way. Companies that do not commit themselves will not survive. And corporate philanthropy, the development of corporate social responsibility, and support for local NGOs are among the levers for transforming organisations. At Pure Ocean, we can give managers the tools to evolve from within.

Companies are getting involved, how can you help them transform?

Companies are also invited to evolve and even transform. We support them by organising events, such as conferences, exchanges with scientists or our ambassadors.

Internally, companies that are committed to environmental or social causes develop the support of their employees beyond what we think. Externally, their commitment leads them to join a community with which they will develop links and be able to work in a virtuous growth model. Today, belonging to such networks makes sense.

What about entrepreneurs who don't have the time or the means to commit?

Entrepreneurs facing difficulties should, of course, focus on their business. But those who can, should be involved in philanthropy and offer their time through various commitments. Because supporting an NGO is not just about giving money. It can also be done through a sponsorship of skills.

Can you give some examples of programmes supported?

We are supporting a study on sea sponges capable of filtering and eventually degrading microplastics from the Mediterranean marine environment. We are also supporting tests on a bio-inspired reef buoy that allows boats to anchor without degrading the seabed and transforms into an artificial reef.
